I'd been wearing this plastic witch mask
scaring people, or at least, I thought I was
they were just pretending, the way adults entertain children.

I'd taken off the mask
walked into the bathroom to get ready for bed
I looked into the mirror and saw a face looking back at me
it wasn't my face, and I wasn't still wearing the mask
if that's what you were thinking.

Shaken, I ran from the room called my father.
He said I'd just given myself a scare
and there was absolutely nothing there

I got ready and went to bed, still thinking about the face in the mirror.
It was real. I did see it. I've never seen it again.
